Honoring Women in Electrical Construction: Celebrating Leadership and Impact

Women are making extraordinary contributions to the electrical construction industry, breaking barriers and shaping its future. With determination, expertise, and a commitment to creating opportunities, they have achieved remarkable progress in a traditionally male-dominated field.

This Women’s History Month, Powering Chicago celebrates their stories, which demonstrate the transformative role women play in advancing the trades and inspire others to follow their lead.

From leading innovative projects to advocating for greater equity, these leaders are paving the way for the future of electrical construction in Chicago and beyond.

Eileen Moran: Leading by Example in Electrical Contracting

Nearly 27 years ago, Eileen Moran and her husband, Jim, established Moran Electrical Contracting—a bold step into an industry they knew little about. Drawing on her background in auditing and accounting, Eileen tackled the challenges of running an electrical contracting business head-on. “I had to do a deep dive, but you just keep learning as you go,” said Moran.

Today, Moran Electrical Contracting is a trusted name in the field, employing 15–20 union electricians during peak seasons and specializing in projects for schools, senior living centers, and multi-unit residential facilities. One standout project is the Pullman National Monument, where Eileen’s team restored the electrical infrastructure of a historic 130-year-old structure. “It’s a major rehab, from a new electric service to controlled exhibition lighting and rewiring a clock tower replica,” said Moran.

Eileen is committed to encouraging more women to consider careers in construction. “There’s so much opportunity, from financial independence to leadership roles,” said Moran. By mentoring students and sharing her story, Eileen is helping to shift perceptions about women in the trades. As the majority shareholder in her business, she is also pursuing WBE certification in Cook County to further expand their reach and impact.

Reflecting on nearly three decades in the industry, Moran explains, “It’s not easy—it’s a tough field. But I’m proud of what we’ve built and the reputation we’ve earned.”

Carrie Liberio: Driving Excellence in High Voltage Construction

Carrie Liberio’s career in electrical construction began at her grandmother’s kitchen table, where her family’s business took root. Today, as COO of High Voltage Electric  (HVE), Carrie oversees operations and ensures the company delivers on its reputation for reliability and expertise. HVE specializes in high-voltage testing and maintenance for schools, hospitals, wind farms, and pharmaceutical labs while providing 24/7 emergency response services for critical infrastructure.

“Emergencies happen at all hours, and being ready to respond quickly has built trust with our clients,” said Liberio. Her hands-on field experience as a groundman electrician gave her valuable insights that she now applies to managing large-scale projects.

Carrie is also passionate about inspiring the next generation of women in construction. “We need to show young women they can succeed as electricians, engineers, or project managers,” said Liberio. Her dedication to mentorship and professional development exemplifies how leaders in the industry can create opportunities for others.

Tina Chung: 25 Years of Advocacy and Leadership

When Tina Chung founded Horizon Contractors in 1996, she entered an industry where women entrepreneurs were scarce. Today, Horizon Contractors is a leading name in municipal electrical projects, from schools and libraries to street lighting and traffic systems.

As Secretary and Treasurer of the Federation of Women Contractors (FWC), Tina champions equity and inclusion across the construction industry. Her advocacy has been recognized with the 2023 FWC President’s Award, highlighting her efforts to support women and minority-owned businesses.

“I hope for a time when inclusion is so deeply ingrained we don’t have to emphasize it,” said Chung. Her commitment to mentorship and her hands-on approach to leadership continue to inspire change, ensuring the construction industry values skill and innovation above all else.
