The Power of Better Episode 10: Highlighting the Transformation of Chicago’s Newest Marriott Hotel, The Residence Inn

The latest episode of The Power of Better takes viewers behind the scenes for an exclusive look at the massive renovation of a Chicago hotel located in the Mag Mile, known as the Residence Inn by Marriott.

The Prime Group, a real estate developer, purchased the building in 2020, but renovations were required before opening the new hotel to guests. The aim of renovating the building was to preserve its historical features while incorporating the luxurious branding of Marriott’s Residence Inn.

The Prime Group needed an experienced team of construction experts to complete the project, which included GC, Skyline Construction, and G&M Electrical Contractors.

G&M Electrical Contractors was responsible for upgrading the lighting and electrical systems throughout the hotel, including electrical infrastructure needed for kitchens in all guest rooms.

Of course, no project goes without its challenges. G&M Electrical Contractors was tasked with adding kitchenettes to each of the rooms, which meant installing an additional 2-3 circuits per room.

“If you add it up, it’s hundreds of circuits per floor. We were ripping up walls and ripping off ceilings to get all this pipe and wire installed,” said Adam Gooze, CEO of G&M Electrical Contractors.

Despite the challenges encountered during the renovation process, G&M Electrical Contractors exceeded Marriott’s expectations.

“I’ll hire G&M in a heartbeat because not one time did they say it can’t be done. And when you encounter companies that fall in line with what your strategy is all about, you want to hold on to them. And they were great,” said Tommie Van, General Manager of Residence Inn by Marriot.

Three years after purchasing the property, The Prime Group presented a new hotel to the Mag Mile,  Residence Inn by Marriott. At the beginning of May 2024, a day before their soft launch, Van hosted a celebration with his new team to mark this milestone.

“This has been a three-year journey of going through the processes of removing another chain and bringing Marriott out into the picture. It’s been a long process, but it’s well worth it,” said Van. To learn more about how G&M Electrical Contractors helped bring this challenging renovation into reality, watch episode 10 of The Power of Better and subscribe to Powering Chicago’s YouTube channel to keep up with future episodes.
