Inside the Terry Allen Community Center gymnasium at IBEW Local 134’s Union Hall, hundreds of boxes were sitting waiting to be picked up by coaches for this year’s Special Olympics. The boxes contained shirts and sweatpants for the roughly 4,000 athletes who will participate in the Special Olympics games next month. This is the second year that IBEW 134 has donated its space to Special Olympics Chicago to ensure there’s a safe place to store and distribute the shirts for the game’s athletes.
This year’s games, which begin on May 2nd with Opening Ceremonies at Soldier Field, will feature close to 4,000 athletes participating in various track and field events from May 6-10 at Eckersall Stadium.
Special Olympics and Chicago have a history that dates back to the summer of 1968, when the first Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field. Since then, the games have grown to serve thousands of athletes, offering year-round athletic training for 22 different events.
