In Episode 17 of ThePower of Better, Powering Chicago Highlights Solar Innovation at the American College of Chest Physicians

In episode 17 of The Power of Better, viewers receive an inside look at an ambitious solar panel installation at the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) headquarters in Glenview. Known for advancing pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine, CHEST sought to make its facility reflect the same commitment to health and sustainability it brings to patient care.

That commitment now takes shape through an installation that powers one-third of CHEST’s 48,000-square-foot building, utilizing 560 solar panels to reduce energy costs by approximately $40,000 each year.

The Importance of a Qualified Electrical Contractor

Powering Chicago contractor Hardt Electric, led by second-generation electrician Peter Hardt, was selected to bring this project to life. Their team faced a unique challenge: a roof load restriction that required advanced planning and precision.

To address it, Hardt Electric installed more than 300 OMG anchors to support the upper roof and developed a specialized rail system to ensure long-term durability. The entire discovery and installation process took approximately three and a half months.

“This was more than just a 265-kilowatt system,” Hardt explained. “It was about providing a full life-cycle solution that supported CHEST’s long-term vision.”

The project integrated Maxeon Solar Technologies panels, known for their durability and backed by a 40-year warranty, along with AP Systems QT2-483 phase microinverters to convert solar power into efficient, usable electricity. These technologies ensure long-term performance and resilience against harsh weather conditions, providing CHEST with a system built to last.

Why Solar Was the Right Choice

Despite solar energy often making headlines as a trend in the industry, CHEST leadership’s goal was rooted in something deeper: living their mission.

“Many people think that employing solar energy is all about a press release. It’s not for us. It’s really about us demonstrating that we have values, and we like to live those values,” said Dr. Bob Musacchio, CEO and Executive Vice President of CHEST.

By choosing renewable energy, CHEST is reducing its carbon footprint, cutting operational costs, and aligning its facilities with its mission to promote lung and environmental health.

The Powering Chicago Difference

By working with Powering Chicago contractors and IBEW Local 134 electricians, CHEST was assured of a project delivered with unmatched technical expertise, safety standards, and reliability. For municipalities, property owners, and facility managers across Chicagoland, this project demonstrates the value of partnering with skilled professionals who can manage complex installations without compromise.

For pulmonologist Dr. Neil Friedman, who has been a CHEST member for 26 years, the solar project reflects the organization’s long-standing commitment to cleaner air and better lung health.

“This project is totally aligned with our mission as well as our values—thinking about how we keep the air cleaner, how we keep our environment cleaner, and doing as much as possible to promote lung health,” said Friedman.
