Black Business Month: Sustainable Electric’s Commitment to Quality and Community

What began as a one-person operation is now a 10-member team making a lasting impact on Chicago’s schools and communities. Sustainable Electric is the kind of success story we’re proud to share this Black Business Month. Led by founder and owner Keon Jones, the company embodies the dedication, skill, and perseverance that define Chicago’s electrical industry.

Sustainable Electric’s mission is to deliver high-quality, reliable electrical work while promoting sustainable practices like recycling and reusing materials. Much of their work focuses on upgrading electrical systems for Chicago Public Schools—improving safety, efficiency, and learning environments for students and teachers.

Taylor Electric Demonstrates the Powering Chicago Difference in Action

For more than a century, Taylor Electric has delivered high-quality electrical work across Chicago, backed by the skill and professionalism of IBEW Local 134-trained electricians. Under the leadership of President & CEO Kendra Dinkins, the company’s portfolio includes iconic venues like Soldier Field and Rate Field, complex institutional projects, and major renewable energy initiatives.

Taylor Electric is also certified as a minority- and woman-owned business, a distinction that reflects its commitment to equity and opportunity. Recent milestones include providing EV charging stations across Cook County and delivering temporary cabling for the Democratic National Convention in partnership with another Powering Chicago contractor.

Partnership with Powering Chicago has amplified Taylor Electric’s visibility, from professional media coverage to new business opportunities. “We might be competitors, but if what I’m doing is helping another union contractor get a little better, then I’m helping the entire industry,” said Dinkins.

Bud Billiken Parade

Earlier this month, Powering Chicago was proud to attend and sponsor the Bud Billiken Parade, a historic South Side tradition that has brought the community together for more than 90 years. Known as the largest African American parade in the country, it celebrates culture, unity, and educational opportunity, marking the excitement of the back-to-school season.

Beyond the performances and colorful floats, the parade plays a vital role in giving back to local youth. Scholarships, school supply donations, and mentorship initiatives tied to the event help students start the year with the tools and confidence they need to succeed.

This year’s celebration was a vibrant showcase of community pride, featuring marching bands, local organizations, and families coming together to uplift the next generation. We’re looking forward to continuing our support for events like this that inspire, empower, and invest in Chicago’s future leaders.
