As the world begins to negotiate a world in which COVID-19 is less of a threat, it is undeniable that the effect the global pandemic has had on every industry will lead to long-term changes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has already served as a catalyst for adopting new technologies that are needed to create smart buildings. Improved wireless technology is at the heart of this trend, allowing for automation and enhanced amenities that will contribute to the recovery from COVID-19. Ultimately, these modifications will make it easier to attract people back to commercial properties. With enhanced wireless connectivity and increased building automation, it’s also possible to reduce mechanical and maintenance issues through early identification of problems and to eliminate wasted resources, contributing to long-term sustainability.
Smart buildings and the role they play in building the cities of tomorrow were the topic of a panel discussion on January 25, 2021, as part of Midwest Build Week Online’s webinar series — specifically, how creating a framework for smart cities can help address urbanization challenges and enhance sustainability while reducing costs.
Joining Elbert Walters III, the Director of Powering Chicago, were participants Denise Casalino, Executive Vice President for AECOM; Damon Ranieri, LEED GA, CSI CDT, director of Virtual Design + Construction for Leopardo Companies, Inc; and Jason Sudy, National Lead for Transportation Technology Planning for HDR.
The panel discussion addressed questions such as:
- Does the workforce currently exist in Chicagoland to create a smart city?
- What is the role of renewable energy in smart cities?
- How is recovery possible through the building of smart cities?
- What are the challenges and solutions when it comes to implementation in a typical city?
Recovery is on everyone’s mind right now as we move forward. It’s the perfect time to discuss how shifting to smart buildings and smart cities is going to help propel cities like Chicago forward toward smarter living.
