Is the “EV Boom” Here? Predicting When Electric Cars Will Take Over

Five percent. That’s the portion of the public that owned a smartphone before mass market adoption became inevitable. Now, electric vehicles (EV) are reaching that same tipping point — and experts are saying the “EV boom” is next.

Because research on EV adoption is still scant, predicting when electric cars will take over has become a favorite betting game of major media outlets in the past five years. With the recent popularity of EV makers such as Tesla and new models like the Ford F-150 Lightning, it’s safe to say we’re closer to mass market adoption than ever before — and new research is showing that more Americans are ready to take the plunge into EV ownership.

Take for example new survey results from Consumer Reports that show at least 36% of the public is currently considering buying or leasing an EV in 2022. For reference, that number has tripled in just four years, and is on path to continue growing as EV infrastructure (EVSE), such as at-home and public EV charging stations, becomes more widely available.

To that end, a growing number of drivers report they’d be far more inclined to buy a battery electric vehicle once longtime EV concerns are addressed. That means creating greater access to charging, extending vehicle ranges and lowering the traditionally higher cost of purchasing an EV.

But predicting when electric cars will take over isn’t just about consumer interest or infrastructure needs — it’s also about increasing demand through incentives and market trends. In the same report, half of all survey respondents said they were unaware of the growing number of government rebates and credits designed to promote EV adoption.

Moreover, many of the same respondents indicated they would be far more likely to purchase an EV after learning about those credits. Some of these credits, such as Illinois’ EV rebate under the Climate And Equitable Jobs Act, offer up to $4,000 off the purchase of an electric car, significantly reducing the upfront cost for a limited time. In addition to federal incentives, which offer up to $7,500 off the purchase of an EV, more options are available to drivers than ever before.

While mass adoption of EVs is promising for sustainability and green energy initiatives, it also means businesses are going to need to make considerations for implementing EV charging stations on their properties. Whether you’re an individual homeowner, landlord or commercial facility manager, getting ahead of installing EVSE equipment now (especially while charging station tax credits, rebates and grants are prevalent) can save you thousands on installation and maintenance fees in the long run.

If you’re looking for options when it comes to performing EVSE installations, the experts who contributed to Powering Chicago’s new e-book, The Time Is Now: Considerations For EV Charging Infrastructure can help. Inside are tips, tools and strategies for making the most of the upcoming EV boom, as well as advice on why unionized electrical contractors who specialize in EV charging station installations are the best and only choice for EVSE implementation. With Powering Chicago’s deep bench of highly trained and educated electricians, you’ll rest assured knowing your EVSE needs are addressed by skilled professionals.
