IBEW 134 Business Representative Beatrice Thompson Nominated for Crain’s 2024 Notable Leader in Sustainability Award

As Chicago and Cook County face the daunting challenge of achieving hefty clean energy goals in the decades ahead, IBEW Local 134 Business Representative Beatrice (Bea) Thompson stands out as an inspiring leader to the Chicagoland electrical industry. Powering Chicago is thrilled to celebrate Thompson’s recent nomination for the Crain’s 2024 Notable Leader in Sustainability Award.

An Unconventional Path

Thompson’s journey into the electrical industry and sustainability wasn’t a straight one Rather, it was a series of unexpected turns. For over two decades, she was the lone female electrician at the Cook County Correctional Facility, a role that pushed her to break through barriers as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Despite its challenges though, that role allowed her to discover her passion for making a positive impact, sparking her desire to do more for her community.

Thompson then became the first African-American female business representative for IBEW 134. Her transition from being the only woman in a male-dominated field to becoming a leader in her industry embodies the transformative strength and perseverance that define Thompson’s successful career.

Thompson’s Impact on the Future Workforce

At the heart of her work lies a deep-rooted desire to empower others and uplift her community. As a counselor, mentor, and apprentice representative at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute (IN-Tech), she plays a pivotal role in preparing thousands of aspiring electricians during their education.

Thompson’s impact extends beyond the walls of IN-Tech. She is also the Board Secretary for the Illinois IBEW Renewable Energy Fund (REF), a non-profit organization that promotes the safe, productive and sustainable growth of renewable energy systems in Illinois through community partnerships, stakeholder engagement and educational services. In this role, Thompson is directly engaged in workforce development initiatives that create a pathway to apprenticeship and life-long career opportunities for students from some of the most underserved south and west side communities of Chicago.

Thompson’s Crain’s Nomination

Bea’s recent nomination for the Crain’s 2024 Notable Leader in Sustainability Leadership Award is a testament to her amazing contributions to the field. Her efforts are helping to drive the sustainability movement forward, creating a greener future for all.

“Bea Thompson’s leadership and dedication to providing pathways for youth in the sustainability sphere have been a true inspiration. Her proactive approach to fostering an inclusive environment for young people is commendable,” said Elbert Walters III. “Thank you, Bea, for being the change agent we need to empower our transformation to a more sustainable world.”

Thompson’s Commitment to a Better Community

Thompson’s vision for the future extends beyond her professional endeavors, showing a commitment to community empowerment and social justice. She’s actively engaged in organizations like the Sisters of IBEW 134 and the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus of IBEW 134, and she offers support and mentorship to fellow members, particularly women, and minorities entering the trade. Thompson also participates in a number of philanthropic initiatives throughout the year, including the annual Christmas in April (Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago) and many other philanthropic events with IBEW 134 and Powering Chicago. Away from work, Bea is a supporter and fundraiser for the Chicago AIDS Foundation and participates in the annual Chicago Triathlon to raise money and spread awareness for the charity. Her involvement in these initiatives exemplifies her vision for a future that prioritizes community, social responsibility, and collective action for positive change.

Thompson is showing up in the world of sustainability and leadership. Her journey from being the only woman in a male-dominated field to becoming the first African-American female business representative for IBEW 134 shows her dedication to creating change, and Powering Chicago is honored to have the opportunity to work alongside her to develop the next generation of IBEW 134 electricians and a more sustainable Chicago.
