In 1996, Tina Chung, possessing a strong business background and inspired by her father’s expertise in the construction industry, established her electrical construction company, Horizon Contractors.
They specialize in general electric work, lighting installations, underground power and distribution, site electric. Horizon Contractors focuses on projects for schools, other municipal buildings (libraries, fire houses, senior centers, parks ), as well as street lighting and traffic systems.
When Chung founded her company it was during a time when being a young entrepreneur, especially as a woman, was far from the norm and misconceptions and doubts were common. However, she didn’t let these challenges deter her; instead, she transformed them into opportunities, reshaping perceptions through her leadership. Her active presence in meetings, hands-on project management, and direct involvement in fieldwork all sent a powerful message: women don’t just belong in the construction industry; they are capable leaders who influence its trajectory.
Throughout her career Chung has emerged as a prominent advocate for women in the construction industry, evident through her role as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Federation of Women Contractors (FWC). Her dedication and impact on women in the industry was recently recognized when she received the 2023 FWC President’s Award.
Reflecting on her advocacy role, Chung came to realize the importance of standing up and taking action. “If I don’t do it, who will? I am an advocate for all minority and women-owned businesses, and I recognize the challenges these programs face nationwide,” said Chung. “By lending my voice and actively participating in initiatives like disparity studies, even when it may not directly impact me, I ensure that these programs continue and benefit us all.”
With nearly three decades of experience in the industry, Chung offers advice to women entering the construction workforce or considering starting their own company: establish a good business structure and build a strong support network full of good people. Her perspective extends beyond individual success to a broader vision for the industry. She envisions a future where women’s involvement in construction isn’t just a topic of discussion but a normalized reality. She hopes for a time when the spotlight will shift from the gender of contractors to the value and innovation they bring to the field.
“Significant strides have been made in embracing diversity, with a noticeable shift in how companies and individuals recognize and support diverse businesses. My hope is for a future where inclusion is so ingrained that we no longer need to emphasize it. Instead, we’ll celebrate the contributions of all, regardless of their background or identity. While that may be the vision, the reality is that conversations around diversity and inclusion will persist, echoing through time and across industries. My father was involved in similar discussions in the ’80s, and here we are, continuing the dialogue. Change may be slow, but it’s happening, and it’s crucial,” said Chung.
