In a heartwarming display of community support and remembrance, Powering Chicago member contractor Aldridge Electric and its IBEW Local 134 electricians recently partnered with the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation to illuminate its Gold Star Family Christmas Tree.
This annual tradition is a touching tribute to fallen Chicago police officers and their families during the holiday season.
A Meaningful Partnership
The tree lighting ceremony is a powerful symbol of remembrance and gratitude for families and loved ones of fallen Chicago police officers. Aldridge Electric, a family-owned electrical contractor with deep roots in Chicago’s infrastructure development, provided over 3,500 LED lights for the installation, which were carefully arranged across three trees at the memorial site.
“Aldridge is honored to be part of this tree ceremony today. We thank Powering Chicago, NECA, IBEW Local 134, and the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation for involving us in this project,” said Colm Maloney, General Foreman at Aldridge Electric.
A Legacy of Remembrance
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation has become a cornerstone of support for the families of fallen officers.
“Our mission is to never forget the officers that were killed in the line of duty. Every big city I went to, I noticed they had a public memorial to police officers killed in the line of duty. Chicago didn’t. I came back, I talked to the Gold Star families, and in two and a half years, we raised $3 million. You see what we have here? We have the finest memorial in the country now,” said Phil Cline, Executive Director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.
The Installation Process
The installation was a carefully orchestrated effort that began early on a December Monday morning. Workers started by protecting the memorial grounds with plywood before proceeding with the tree preparation and lighting installation. The project, which continued through Tuesday morning, demonstrated the skill and dedication of the electrical workers involved.
“It feels really fulfilling being part of something that’s above you because many people take for granted these men and women pay the ultimate sacrifice. It’s kind of nice to show that they are in your hearts and in your minds,” said Matt Berkn, Field Foreman at Aldridge Electric.
Community Impact and Support
Aldridge Electric is a family-owned electrical contractor with a rich history in building, maintaining and strengthening America’s infrastructure. They are committed to large electrical projects and foundation construction in the transportation, mission-critical and power markets. Aldridge Electric is also committed to its local community, and its involvement in this project aligns with that commitment.
“As a People First company, Aldridge is committed to giving back to the community. We believe that providing moments of joy, especially during the tough holiday season, is an essential part of our mission, and we’re always available to assist at any time possible,” said Maloney.
The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation continues its vital work through community support and donations. The Foundation encourages those interested in supporting their mission to visit CPDMemorial.org, where contributions of any size are welcomed and appreciated.
A Tradition of Honor
The annual tree lighting ceremony has become a cherished tradition that brings together various segments of the Chicago community. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers and provides comfort to their families during the holiday season.
“The work that’s being done here is important to make sure that those family members know that their loved ones gave their lives for something greater than anyone could ever imagine,” said Superintendent Larry Snelling, Chicago Police Department.
