Get a behind-the-scenes look into the future of luxury living at 1000M, Chicago’s newest 74-story skyscraper

The newest episode of The Power of Better takes viewers to the site of 1000M, Chicago’s newest 74-story skyscraper that’s scheduled for completion at the end of 2024.

The building is a joint venture between JK Equities, Time Equities, and Oak Capitals. It was one of the final designs of renowned late German-American architect Helmut Jahn, who is known for leading projects like the United Terminal at O’Hare International Airport, the Thompson Center, and 500 West Madison in Chicago, among many other notable designs around the world. At completion, the project will yield 738 apartments, many featuring the most amazing views in downtown Chicago.

Smart technology for a brighter future

While assembling a building of this size is always a challenge, the owners had a very specific vision for its residents — to simplify life for the building occupants using smart technology.

“I said, ‘I want to be able to do everything from your phone. Everything.’”, said Karlik. “I want you to be able to enter the units from your phone, call the elevator from your phone, enter all the amenities from your phone, enter any door of access control from your phone.”

Assembling the best team for the best building

Achieving Karlik’s goal of building the best, most modern building in Chicago is a formidable task. Signatory contractors Gurtz Electric Co. and general contractor McHugh Construction are rising to the challenge.

In the episode, Tim Cuga-Moylan, director of design development at Gurtz Electric Co. demonstrates smart lighting technology at one of the building’s nearly completed units.

“You’re going to have the ability from your phone to control your lighting, turn the dimming all the way down to 10%. And also, call an elevator just like you call an Uber,” said Cuga-Moylan.

1000M will also exceed the city’s requirements for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. But, for a project that started three years ago, and won’t be completed until the end of 2024, staying on top of fast-moving technology is a challenge.

“We feel that our design build expertise, coupled with the desire to continue to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies has allowed us to be successful and deliver this project through its vision,” said Mallory Gurtz, Chief Operating Officer at Gurtz Electric Co.

In this episode you’ll hear from the following industry experts:

  • Jordan Karlik, Principal at JK Equities
  • Dave Steffenhagen, Senior Project Manager at McHugh Construction Co.
  • Mallory Gurtz, Chief Operating Officer at Gurtz Electric Co.
  • Tim Cuga-Moylan, Director of Design Development at Gurtz Electric Co.
