IBEW Local 134 Partners with Jesse Brown VA for “Essentials for Soldiers” Donations

For nine consecutive years, IBEW Local 134 has partnered with the Jesse Brown VA  in support of the Essentials for Soldiers, An annual charity drive providing essential items to veterans facing hardship. Members pack supplies, clothing, and other basics to deliver to Veterans Affairs hospitals across the Chicago area.

In 2016, the IBEW Local 134 established a riders club in Chicago, directing its efforts towards charitable work, including supporting veterans’ services. The group actively organizes charity rides and fundraisers throughout the year, demonstrating a strong dedication to contributing to the community.

“95% of what we do, our charity rides, it’s always for somebody. So it’s the greatest thing to be in because you’re having fun doing what you love to do and you’re helping people out,” said Dean Hinderman, President of the Local 134 Riders Club.

The Essentials for Soldiers drive provides veterans with essential items like t-shirts, socks, and underwear – basics many homeless veterans lack the means to get otherwise.”This program provides a sense of dignity and our veterans in need know that they can come to our veterans clothing room at Jesse Brown VA and meet that need,” said Patrick Gleason, Chief of Volunteer Services at Jesse Brown VA.

This November, Local 134 members packed three vans and a large trailer with over six months’ supplies. The veterans look forward to the annual visit, greeting the arriving members with appreciation for helping provide dignity and meet essential needs.

“Veterans, people that actually put their lives on the line so I can have a better life so my family can have a better life. Veterans deserve so much, so much respect. It’s wonderful just to give them a thank you for what they did for us, which I can never repay, “said Dean Hinderman, President of the Local 134 Riders Club.

This sentiment lies at the heart of IBEW Local 134’s annual charity drive. By dedicating time, effort, and donations to provide essential support each year, the members aim to show their appreciation for Veterans and improve the quality of life for those facing hardship after their service. The care, compassion, and commitment behind this long-standing partnership make a real difference.
