Episode three of The Power of Better, Powering Chicago’s YouTube series, focuses on the future of the electrical industry. Viewers follow along as the Power of Better host and Powering Chicago executive director Elbert Walters III takes them on a tour of 3M’s Innovation Center, followed by a sit-down interview with Chicago Building Commissioner Matthew Beaudet.

The first segment highlights a technology that’s new in the United States, for medium voltage cabling technology. In the second segment, you’ll learn about electrical code initiatives taking effect this year and how they impact Chicago’s progress toward electrification.

Segment One: 3M medium voltage cabling technology

Viewers will learn about medium voltage cabling technology, used in Europe for years, that has now arrived in the U.S. Experts at 3M explain how this technology modernizes the Grid via 3M™ Sensored Cable Accessories (SCA), which simplify a path for assessing and improving fault detection, power quality and power flow.

Walters sits down with Chicago Building Commissioner Matthew Beaudet, who explains how the goal of these new code initiatives is to make sure the codes work for everybody in the city and support Chicago’s efforts toward electrification, while moving away from fossil fuels.
