Black Business Month: Sustainable Electric’s Commitment to Quality and Community

From a one-person operation to a 10-member team making a lasting impact on Chicago’s schools and communities, Sustainable Electric is the kind of success story we’re proud to share this Black Business Month. Led by founder and owner Keon Jones, the company’s growth reflects the dedication, skill, and perseverance that Black Business Month was created to honor. This month highlights the achievements of Black business owners while sharing stories that inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. As a Powering Chicago member contractor, Sustainable Electric embodies the values that strengthen our industry and the communities we serve.

Building a Business from the Ground Up

Keon’s journey began with a clear goal of becoming an electrical contractor. After completing his apprenticeship and gaining hands-on experience in the field, he launched Sustainable Electric in 2016.

From its early days as a one-person operation, the company has grown into a skilled team dedicated to safety, efficiency, and delivering exceptional client service.

Sustainable Electric’s mission is to deliver high-quality, reliable electrical work while promoting sustainable practices. This includes recycling, reusing materials, and implementing environmentally conscious methods on the job site.

“My mission is to deliver high-quality, reliable electrical work while promoting sustainable practices and building a skilled, dependable team,” said Keon Jones, Owner of Sustainable Electric. “What I mean by sustainable practices is like recycle, renew, reuse.”

Keon sees these practices as essential not only for the success of individual projects but for creating long-term benefits for the communities they serve.

Improving Safety and Efficiency for Chicago Schools

A large portion of Sustainable Electric’s work is with Chicago Public Schools (CPS), upgrading electrical systems to improve safety and efficiency for classrooms. Projects often involve enhancing fire alarm systems, lighting, and power infrastructure changes, which have a direct impact on students and teachers.

“It’s rewarding to know that our work directly supports students and teachers every day. But, yes, the bulk of our work is CPS work in the summer,” said Jones.

Overcoming Industry Challenges

Running a small business comes with challenges, particularly when competing against larger firms and managing cash flow.

“I would say one challenge is just competing with other larger companies, because more than likely, they’re going to choose the larger company over the smaller company unless your price is extremely low,” said Jones. “And also, I would say cash flow is one of the biggest issues.”

Despite these obstacles, Keon has built a reputation for reliability and strong client relationships, qualities that continue to open new opportunities.

The Importance of Representation in the Trades

Keon believes that representation plays a key role in attracting the next generation of electricians.

“I think representation shows the younger generation that there’s a place for them in the trades,” said Jones. “When they see people who look like them succeeding, it breaks down barriers, inspires confidence, and encourages them to pursue these types of careers.”

For those considering a career in the trades or starting a business, Keon offers insightful advice.

“I would say stay committed to learning your craft. Build strong, professional relationships. Don’t be afraid to take opportunities that push you out of your comfort zone,” said Jones. “ Your skills, reliability, and reputation will open doors. And your presence will inspire others to follow.”

Looking ahead, Keon’s vision for Sustainable Electric is to keep creating quality jobs, advance sustainable practices, and encourage more young people to see the trades as a path to long-term success.
