The Illinois IBEW Renewable Energy Fund (REF) continues to advance the safe, productive, and sustainable growth of renewable energy systems across Illinois. Through strategic community partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and educational programming, the REF plays a key role in preparing the next generation of electricians and renewable energy workers.
At the heart of this effort is the Craft Apprenticeship Program, which provides early exposure and skill development opportunities to individuals interested in the renewable energy field. One of its most impactful initiatives is the Summer Solar Program. This intensive, hands-on training experience introduces participants to the standards, tools, and techniques necessary for installing renewable energy systems.
On July 29, 2025, the 2025 Summer Solar Graduation Ceremony took place at the IBEW Local 134 Union Hall. This year, 83 graduates were recognized for their successful completion of the summer program and are now entering the trainee phase of their education at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute (IN-TECH) in Alsip.
The event began with a live installation exercise in the union hall’s parking lot, showcasing the technical skills students developed over the summer. The celebration then moved into Memorial Hall, where graduates were formally recognized for their accomplishments. Speaker of the House Emanuel “Chris” Welch spoke at this year’s ceremony, highlighting the upward and outward mobility available in the solar industry and the broader potential of careers in renewable energy.
These individuals now move forward with foundational training and real-world experience, ready to contribute to the future of clean energy in Illinois. Their journey reflects a larger commitment shared by IBEW Local 134, the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Chicago, and Powering Chicago: building a stronger, more sustainable future through union-trained talent.
Congratulations to the 2025 Summer Solar Program graduates. We’re proud to celebrate your success, and we look forward to seeing what’s next. Learn more about Powering Chicago’s apprenticeship programs and workforce development efforts by visiting our website.
