Celebrating Black Business Month: Honoring Leading Electrical Contractors in Chicago

Every August, Black Business Month offers an opportunity to recognize the achievements of Black-owned businesses and their vital role in shaping Chicago’s electrical industry. Powering Chicago is proud to champion the Black-owned electrical contractors in Chicago who exemplify union craftsmanship that is building a brighter future for our city and region.

As we celebrate Black Business Month, we honor the legacy, leadership, and innovation of Black-owned electrical contractors in Chicago. These businesses exemplify the union values of quality, safety, and community investment, while paving the way for the next generation of tradespeople.

Evans Electric LLC: Two Decades of Excellence

Founded over 20 years ago, Evans Electric LLC has become a cornerstone among electrical contractors in Chicago, known for its technical expertise and commitment to quality. The company’s journey began with a vision to deliver exceptional electrical solutions while providing meaningful opportunities for skilled tradespeople from underrepresented backgrounds. Through hard work and a dedication to continuous improvement, Evans Electric has earned a reputation for tackling complex projects with precision and reliability.

Beyond their impressive project portfolio, Evans Electric is deeply invested in the future of the electrical industry. The company actively mentors apprentices and young electricians, sharing knowledge and creating a culture of growth. By prioritizing workforce development and community engagement, Evans Electric LLC not only powers Chicago’s infrastructure but also empowers the next generation of union-trained professionals.

“I’d like to see more minority and women-owned businesses become more engaged. I would like to see other aspects of the construction industry work with us as true partners to build and improve the quality of life for our city, county, and state,” said Michael Evans, founder of Evans Electric.

Waddell Green: Building Success Through Community

Waddell Green’s journey as an electrician and business owner began as an apprentice at IBEW Local 134 in 1970. Green worked for several contractors before passing his contractor exam and co-founding E. Wilson and Associates in 1984.

Rather than competing in the challenging new construction bidding process, Green and his partners focused on maintenance contracts with Chicago Public Schools and major residential complexes like Lake Meadows and Regents Park. His hands-on experience in the field included notable projects such as the Bulk Mail Facility in Forest Park, the reconstruction of Midway Airport, and even a seven-month stint in Alaska working on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System—a project he describes as the most enlightening of his career.

Green’s proudest achievements have been rooted in mentorship and community impact. He recalls the satisfaction of being recognized for his work—such as installing track lighting at a Chicago art gallery—but he places even greater value on the opportunity to guide and uplift others in the trade.

Simply E&C Corp: Success Rooted in Relationships

Simply E&C Corp has built its reputation on a strong foundation of community relationships and a steadfast commitment to union values. As a Black-owned electrical contractor in Chicago, Simply E&C understands the importance of trust, transparency, and collaboration in every project. Their ability to listen to clients’ needs and deliver tailored solutions has made them a preferred choice for facility managers and property owners across the region.

What sets Simply E&C apart is its dedication to giving back. The company invests in local workforce development and actively participates in mentorship programs, helping to open doors for aspiring electricians from diverse backgrounds. By leveraging union training, Simply E&C continues to drive positive change both within the industry and throughout the communities it serves.

“Being able to give back, being able to provide employment that allows people to support their families, that’s the most important part,” said Calvin Payne, Simply E&C Corp co-founder.

Taylor Electric Company: A Century of Service

With over 100 years of service, Taylor Electric Company, a family-owned business, has played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s electrical landscape. Their legacy is built on a foundation of union craftsmanship, technical expertise, and a commitment to excellence on every job.

“Our main goal is to provide. To provide for the disenfranchised or the people who need the help. We have to give a pathway to prosperity, but you have to be willing to take those steps,” said Bryan Taylor, foreman/electrician at Taylor Electric Company.

Throughout its history, Taylor Electric has remained dedicated to community engagement and workforce development. The company’s leadership has ensured that opportunities for growth and advancement are available to all. As Taylor Electric looks to the future, its century-long legacy continues to inspire new generations of union-trained electricians and business leaders.
