Essential Technologies Maintaining Illinois’ Wastewater Treatment Facilities
In episode 12 of ‘The Power of Better,’ Elbert Walters III, Executive Director of Powering Chicago, visits the Algonquin Wastewater Treatment Facility to explore the intricate process of purifying wastewater before it is released into the Fox River. This episode highlights the critical role of reliable electrical systems, advanced technology, and strict code compliance in maintaining the facility’s operations.
Following an electrical failure, it became evident that a comprehensive system examination was necessary to prevent future occurrences and ensure ongoing reliability. The facility worked with Powering Chicago signatory contractor Jamerson and Bauwens Electrical Contractors, Inc., to identify and address potential risks using infrared and ultrasonic technology. Jamerson and Bauwens’ proactive approach, combined with adherence to safety standards, ensured the facility’s smooth operation and environmental safety.

Powering Chicago’s Executive Director Elbert Walters III shares insights on Expanding EVSE Infrastructure to Underserved Communities in REJournals article
Did you know that about 31% of U.S. households live in multifamily housing—such as apartments, condos, and townhouses—yet less than 5% of home EV charging takes place in these buildings? Elbert Walters III addresses this disparity in his latest article, “Bridging the EV Charging Divide: Expanding Infrastructure to Underserved Communities,” published by REJournals.
He explores how underserved communities risk being left behind as electric vehicle adoption grows without equitable charging access. Walters also emphasizes the need to expand EV infrastructure and discusses innovative solutions to bridge this gap, including:
- Universal EV payment cards allow low-income residents without credit cards to easily pay at public charging stations.
- Smart panels and outlets transform regular outlets into metered, shareable EV charging points, making charging more accessible.
- Mobile charging stations because they offer the convenience of bringing EV charging directly to users, wherever they are.

Powering Chicago Members Go Above and Beyond for South Side Homeowner
Driven by a strong sense of community support, Powering Chicago’s signatory contractor, Meade Electric, and electricians from IBEW Local 134 volunteered for ‘Christmas in April,’ an event organized by Rebuilding Together Metro Chicago. This initiative focuses on providing homes in Englewood with essential electrical repairs.
Initially, the tasks were simple—replacing outlets and light fixtures and addressing safety issues. However, seven weeks later, a homeowner experienced a complete power loss due to a failure in the utility’s service entrance and meter housings. With a hot summer ahead and no electricity, Meade Electric stepped up without hesitation and navigated the complexities of engineering designs and permits to install a new service entrance, riser, and meter sockets—work that would have cost the homeowner thousands.
